Pastor Dave Hilliard Sums up Small Groups Conference

By Paul | March 12, 2008

dave-hilliard.jpgWHERE’D YA GO?    Paul Casey and I attended the Small Groups Conference at Saddleback Church in Orange County, California.  I was especially interested in better understanding how they start small groups and how they keep their process for making disciples purposeful and simple.  And I am always stimulated by learning how purposeful leaders tackle the challenges all churches face.
WHO STOKED YER FIRE?  Rick Warren was probably the most inspirational speaker to me.  Mostly because his talk on Accelerating Your Spiritual Growth related closely to the task our staff has taken on of developing a discipleship process.  Also, Rick is inspirational to me because I knew him as a fellow seminary student and church planter.  It is inspiring to see what God can do with purpose and faith.
WHAT YA GONNA DO BOUT IT? Paul and I are meeting with some small group leaders and coaches to mull over some ideas from the conference we may want to implement.  They include a spiritual health assessment, all-church campaigns for starting new groups, recruiting “hosts” rather than “leaders,” short-term initial commitments for leaders, 10-h staff for coaching up to 25 groups, and decentralized training modules for leaders.  I would also like to incorporate some ideas for coordinating adult ministries better.
WHAT BOUT THE REST OF US? The overall message I brought back is that we can make disciples more intentionally and productively if we all know, agree on, and cooperate in pursuing the process God gives us.
WAS THE SURF UP, DUDE? Sunny Southern California would have been more of a treat if we had ever seen the sun or the temperature had gotten above 50.
