Interns Add Value to Youth Program
By Paul | January 10, 2008
Jasmine Carpenter, Adam Phillips, and Ryan Tackett are interning this year in the youth department of Bethel, and have brought a ton of enthusiasm and passion for God along with them. A quick interview to allow you to meet them:
From Jasmine:
1. What prompted you to sign up for interning at Bethel this year?
To be honest, I wasn’t looking to work in middle school ministry at all this year. However, after spending time at camp with the kids, God began to open my eyes to see the areas He could use me in the group. I approached John Stone about serving this year, and here I am! It was definitely all God’s doing.
2. What are your main duties/responsibilities?
Ryan, Adam and I switch off planning responsibilities for Sunday morning. We plan most of the middle school/ high school events. We also help around the church wherever we are needed.
3. What are your main learnings thus far, from experience, from John Stone, from the students, etc.?
I have learned countless things from observing people, lessons from John, and from the kids. I would say that the main lesson I have learned is how to listen to the voice of God, to be in His Word daily, and to trust in His plans.
4. Do you see first-hand the power of small groups in the lives of the middle schoolers? If so, how?
I think it is so easy for a student to get lost in the crowd in the church today. Without a small group, a lot of these kids would not be reached on a level they need. I believe that small groups give both students and leaders the opportunity to minister to each other in a way that can’t be done in a large group setting.
5. How can we be praying for you right now?
Please be praying for faith and trust, as God continues to show me the plans He has for my life.
6. Just for fun, if you were a zoo animal, what would you be and why?
I would have to say a monkey because they get to roam around in the sun all day and do whatever they want.
From Adam:
1. What prompted you to sign up for interning at Bethel this year?
Late in 2006 I felt God really pushing me to get involved at church more. I grew up a pastor’s kid and always was involved, but sort of took a step back two years ago. Teachers and coaches always told me I was a natural leader, and family always told me I was meant for ministry. I didn’t agree with any of them until about a year ago. I was in my first year of college and had no idea what I wanted to be. Different career ideas would only stay appealing for about a week and then I’d find myself stumped again. I believe this was the Lord’s work in showing me that ministry is what He wanted me doing. My passion for it grew stronger every day and when May hit last year I was itching to start pursuing ministry. I started meeting with John Stone and we decided that I should do a volunteer internship in the summer. I did it and loved it! I went to camp and told John that I would loved to continue doing what I was doing. He offered me a part time internship for this year and I took it.
2. What are your main duties/responsibilities?
I help run Ignite and Grow Groups with the two other interns. We are responsible for planning worship, games and the speaker. I am also in the process of forming worship teams and getting a steady schedule going. We interns also have class three times a week where John teaches us about the Old Testament.
5. How can we be praying for you right now?
There are a few ways you can be praying for me:
-My hunger for prayer and being in the Word will continue to grow.
-The Lord can show me the kids I should be pouring into.
-Opportunities to share the gospel with employees at Red Robin.
