The Veterans in Small Group Leadership
By Paul | November 14, 2007
Dick Erickson, chairman of our elder board, has been leading a small group with his wife Jeanne for a LONG TIME. With all those years of leadership comes much wisdom. We tried to dig a bit with this couple to tap into some of that wisdom.
1. You’ve been leading small groups for many years now, and we’d like to learn from you. First, what process do you go through to prepare yourself for small group each week?
If we do not have an ongoing study we typically discuss on the weekend and decide on a topic for our next GROW Group meeting. Tuesday and/or Wednesday are spent talking about what and how to present. Wednesday we usually decide on questions and direction for evening. Wednesday is also time of prayer. Thursday is the night of Group. We put final touches on the evening and pray.
2. What’s going through your mind as the most important thing that you believe God wants you to drive the group toward each week?
Read your Bible and pray daily, trusting God will grow you and reveal to you how to live your life for Him.
3. Would you be willing to tell us of a mistake you made in leadership of a small group and how you learned from it?
At times trying to keep on our schedule for the evening instead of being sensitive to the Spirit’s leading and working through a member of our group. Also take action quickly to correct ungodly behavior.
4. What keeps you coming back year after year in SG leadership?
It’s a ministry we get to do together, there’s great fellowship and relationship with others, the enjoyment we receive in helping others, and love for the people.
