At a recent staff training Bethel small group leader Don Odegard shared lessons learned from his leadership of turning around 5 companies and how those same principles can be applied to group/team leadership.
Don’s High Five in Team Mechanics (modified from The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team)
1. Trust (starts with the consistency of the leader)
2. Conflict (the ability to disagree comfortably in a group; shouldn’t have to leave the room to spare hurt feelings; this takes time!)
3. Commitment (passion for what we are doing)
4. Accountability embraced (reward/recognition, too)
5. Results-focused (Disciplined people using disciplined thought to produce disciplined action.)
Don’s Leadership Mechanics (modified from Good to Great)
Having:
1. The right people
2. With the right follow-up (high touch)
3. With the right measurements
4. With the right focus/strategy
5. With the right tools (coming from those who are in the trenches)
