More Care Group Year Highlights:
During Sharefest this year our care group helped West Richland Baptist church clean and burn trash, tumble weeds, etc. We also moved a cyclone fence, dug holes for the new ones, and concreted in the poles. Had a great time helping them out and everyone felt good about it. One of our members had a great idea, suggesting we go visit their church after our early service in a few weeks and surprise them. We worked out a time that most everyone could go. When we got there, their congregation consisted of about 25 members, and there were 10 or 11 of us. It was a Sunday that they honored missionaries: a young lady by the name of Katy Kersh was there from Western Oregon. She was going to be leaving for the Middle East in a few weeks. What she shared, but mainly how she was on fire for the Lord, captured all of our hearts. Katy is in her mid twenties and is single. Her stay was going to be 3-5 years; she asked us to keep her in our prayers. We bring her name up often in our care group when it comes to prayer request time. Instead of us going to blessing them we individually and as a group were blessed, things like this is what brings people in small groups even closer together.

“I would say this past year was a season of relationship. It was our 2nd year together and I sensed through the material we covered, a greater desire to get out of our church comfort zones. Just Walk Across the Room was a great study for reaching out to our un-churched friends. There were a couple of people I was able to get to come to Bethel functions as a result of this focus. I personally feel closer to those in the group now than when we began the year.”

We trade off leading in study. One night Steve did a study on the tongue. We took turns reading scriptures on the subject. We read dozens of passages he had selected, letting the Word teach us, rather than trying to interject our thoughts and ideas. It was cool.

Highlights of the year? That’s easy! There are two that stand out for our group. The first was our annual care group retreat at Ghormley Meadows. This has been a tradition for the past several years. We go in the fall and use the time to kick off the group, communicate the vision and set the course for the year. It’s a time of strengthening existing relationships with returning members and getting to know new members. Our study time centered on the “Walk Across the Room” DVD series by Bill Hybels. We believe the annual weekend retreat is key to starting the year off strong.
The second highlight has been our involvement with the Skills Development Mission in Kennewick. This ministry serves children of immigrants by providing help with homework, reading, computer and social skills in order to facilitate their assimilation into the community. This has been a very rewarding experience for our entire group. The students age range from about 6 to 16. The ministry operates in the evenings Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Our group serves the second Monday of each month (even through the summer). More help is needed. Interested groups may contact me for more information.

We started a new group this year, with 6 couples that were largely strangers with one another. It has been great to see these couples bond together through Bible study, prayer and service activities, and really come to know and support one another, as well as encourage one another spiritually. One example of this was supporting one of our members through prayer and encouragement who led a missions trip to China this spring, and supporting another member who is going on a missions trip to China this summer.

I learned some good things and was encouraged by the stories from the groups.
THANKS.
