Spotlight on…Our Outreach Director

By Paul | February 3, 2007

dave-dawson.jpgWe caught up with (literally!) Bethel’s Director of Outreach, Dave Dawson, to see what he’s been up to, and what we small group leaders can learn from him:

What outreach ministries of Bethel fall under your leadership supervision, and how to keep the fire hot under them? Internal to Bethel: Alpha and First Steps External to Bethel: primarily events–like Fall Frenzy, building short-term teams to meet needs; Mormon outreach; Hispanic outreach team (H.O.T.); and missions

My primarily role with these ministries: 1. Get the right person leading it, like Shawn Gay with H.O.T., and keeping each other fired up 2. Talking with leaders to validate/resource them, keeping the main thing in the forefront, and asking them good questions to get them being creative with their giftedness

What initiative are you currently working on, that you are very excited about? Partnership with Broetje orchards, working together to run a community center in a new development in east Pasco for migrant workers

What primary goals would you like to see accomplished before the end of 2007? Determine nature of the Broetje partnership and getting people involved with it; also, more people involved in short-term mission trips (China especially)

You are on the leadership team of Bethel. Who else makes up that group, and what do you guys talk about? Dave Bechtel, Dave Hilliard, Bob Bonner, and Teri Pearson make up the team. We are currently wrestling with, “Are we making the decisions we are supposed to be making? How strategic are we? How can we do it better?” The LT sets direction of where we as a church are going, and seeks to improve our operating culture at Bethel.

How do you balance your personal wellness, your family life and your ministry life? Not take myself super seriously—the key is a great sense of humor. Also, things go better when I work out/exercise. And I really like going to my kids’ sports and activity stuff—just being together as a family. I try to make a point of not letting ministry stuff consume my thoughts 24/7.

Pump up our leaders, Dave. Leaders, start by recognizing and believing that you have a God-given power to influence the people in your world.
